Things to know about camping in the Black Rock Desert

Things I learned on my last trip to the desert.

Things I learned on my last trip to the desert:

  • There's no such thing as too many fireworks.
  • Next time I'm bringing a better camp marker to I can find my way home in the dark!
  • It's relatively cheap to rent a small portapotty trailer, and it's way nicer than a bucket of kitty litter.

I learned:

  • extra fuel, driving on the playa uses up much more fuel (2x in my case) than on the highway... speeds are about the same. Staying on the well-worn roads decreases the fuel consumption a bit... but they're never leading (directly) where I want to go!
  • a second car and driver for taking long trips to the Black Rock (hot springs?) and further afield... both cars should be able to:
    1. carry all occupants from both cars back to civilisation (camp) in case of catastrophic failure of one of the cars
    2. either car should be able to pull the other out of a soft, muddy or lumpy playa
    3. both should be juplaya-appropriate, if you know what I mean
